Outer Banks, NC – Shirley Brooks-Jones of Dublin, Ohio is the recipient of the 2009 Hometown Hero Award based on a winning essay submitted by her nephew, Tim Byrd.

The family was gathered for the holidays and once again, the dinner table conversation was centered around the “Lewisporte Area 15 Scholarship Fund” (formerly ‘Flight 15 Scholarship Fund’) which was spearheaded by his Aunt Shirley in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11^th, 2001. Tim was inspired listening to his Aunt recount her personal story about that most scary of times. When he saw the request for “Hometown Heroes” on the Village Realty website (www.villagerealtyobx.com) Tim submitted his marvelous story for consideration. The entire family just spent a week at the Croatan Surf Club in Kill Devil Hills, in two beautiful oceanfront condominiums, honoring Shirley for her generous spirit.

Ten years ago on 9/11, Shirley was on Delta Flight 15 returning from Denmark when the captain announced the plane was having ‘technical difficulty’ and needed to land at the nearest airport, which happened to be a very small terminal in Gander, Newfoundland. The passengers were unsettled but understanding and relieved when they landed safely. It was perplexing to see so many other jet airliners grounded and more flying into such a small village airport. Finally, the pilot conceded with solemn sincerity to his passengers that there really was no technical malfunction, but a national emergency in the United States: Passenger jet planes had demolished the twin towers in New York, the pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a passenger plane flying over Pennsylvania had reportedly gone down. Shirley and her 218 fellow passengers on Flight 15 were awestruck. For 28 ½ hours, afterwards all of the passengers remained on their grounded planes as luggage was checked by security. The passengers expressed fear and an understandable sense of concern for family and friends in their homeland of America. The pilot kept them updated as he found out more information but there was no way to determine how long they would have to remain in this little place called Gander, Newfoundland, or even on that plane waiting for word. Eventually, the passengers were disembarked and shuttled by bus to various inns and bed & breakfasts, and homes of the people of nearby Lewisporte. There they were met with open arms and generous hospitality of the most friendly and sympathetic village. Cell phones were shared amongst the people, computers were offered and most of all warmth and welcoming for these people of America, who wanted so desperately to just go home.

After only spending a few days with the kind people of Lewisporte, Shirley and her fellow passengers eventually bid farewell and boarded their Delta Flight 15 for Atlanta. Shirley had an epiphany. How to thank these people for their hospitality? She would start a scholarship fund for their children! She quickly raised $15,000 in pledges on the plane for the “Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund” and after they landed and everyone went their separate ways…Shirley spent the next ten years traveling back and forth to Gander, presenting scholarships each year to the children. To date, the fund has raised over $1.5 million.

Shirley’s nephew Tim and his wife Jamie have been coming to the Outer Banks for family vacations with their children for four years, usually staying in a home on the soundside of the Currituck Club in Corolla through Village Realty. They were delighted come to Kill Devil Hills this past week after Thanksgiving to enjoy the oceanfront views from the Croatan Surf Club. The beautiful heated indoor pool was a treasure for all and they said they enjoyed the luxurious kitchen amenities in the condo so much, they didn’t venture out to dinner, except to pick up some delicious peel & eat shrimp to go from “Awful Arthur’s” twice, to bring home. They did do some Christmas shopping at the local shoppes and had lunch in Manteo at “Darrell’s Seafood”. They loved walking on the beach, collecting shells and enjoyed the sunshine and balmy breeze with their balcony doors open to the ocean air. All in all, it was a magnificent vacation and they will ALL be back again, and again!

Village Realty Gives Helping Hand to "Outer Banks Children @ Play Museum"

Located in Kitty Hawk directly along the bypass (3809 N. Croatan Hwy) at milepost 4.5, the Outer Banks Children @ Play Museum is a place where small children (primarily ages 1-6) can learn about local landmarks by playing in a make-believe, hands-on, creative and safe indoor environment.

The museum hosts donated 'exhibits' that feature many of the Outer Banks area things to do, such as a wooden playhouse with the Hatteras Lighthouse attributes, a fishing boat with magnetic poles and fish in a make-believe Albemarle Sound, an airplane with a view of the Wright Memorial, a fish cleaning station with pretend tools and an 'outdoor' market for imaginative children to sell local produce or sea shells.

An ideal place to bring the little ones on a rainy day to play and learn about the Outer Banks. The museum provides activities for parents to interact with their children, such as making jellyfish out of cups and recycled paper as well as detailed descriptions of each exhibit. Drama and Science workshops are also incorporated in the weekly calendar.

Featured in the Front Gallery of Dare County Arts Council, you can see her striking photography from July 1 – 30, 2011. About her work, Ms. Kidd says, “I enjoy capturing moments and images that happen only once, and places that are architecturally and historically beautiful and significant. My mission is to bring these moments and places to you through my work and to do it without the use of any image-enhancement software. Each of my images is an original, one-of-a-kind piece of art.”

An award winning artist, Ms. Kidd hails from the Lake Gaston area of North Carolina. She earned a degree in Psychology with several years of experience in a research environment, but turned her passion for photography into a career in 2003. Her images have been used by Time Warner in their documentary on Warren County, NC, and she holds a Press Pass with The Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

A lively First Friday reception will take place from 6-8 pm on July 1st. Come enjoy an evening of light fare, libations, and live music, plus meet this talented artist. This will be a double opening reception, as the paintings of Ann Rubino will also be on display in the Vault Gallery, so don’t miss out on the fun.

Outer Banks, NC – Matt Whelan, Senior Real Estate Broker for Village Realty, Nags Head spearheads an extraordinary gift of kindness for our local Outer Banks Hotline locations.

Hotline (founded in 1980) is a private, non-profit human services organization that provides crisis intervention, temporary shelter, information and referrals, advocacy and domestic abuse prevention education services to residents of and visitors to the Northern Outer Banks.

Lynn Bryant (Executive Director Outer Banks Hotline) tells the story:

It all started with a kind-hearted woman by the name of Betty Butler of Kill Devil Hills. Betty volunteered her time, working in the original Hotline’s Manteo Thrift Store every single Wednesday for nearly two decades. Betty was also an active member of the Board of Directors devotedly offering her time and her warm smile to those in need. When she passed away several years ago, Hotline sorely missed her generosity, friendliness, kindness and compassion.

Betty’s son, Steve Johnson was proud of his mother’s dedication. He admired the work that she did and the services provided by Hotline to families on the Outer Banks. Steve now lives in the mountains of Winchester, VA and is an active member and missionary of his church. Each year, his church missionaries, comprised of approximately 20 men and women (with combined skills of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, etc). raise funds and travel all over the world (most recently the disaster relief project in Haiti) “sharing the love of Christ by doing service for their neighbors.” Through church contributions they pay their own living expenses, and buy all supplies from local retailers to help the communities they serve.

This year, in honor of his Mom, Steve presented Outer Banks Hotline to the missionaries. The original Manteo building is in disrepair, especially the parking lot where the lighting hasn’t worked for quite some time. The Hotline Pink location in Kitty Hawk needs roof and soffit repairs and the building needs repainting. The missionaries purchased salvaged parking lot lights through a local supplier in Virginia, and will buy paint and construction materials from locally owned Kellogg’s, Griggs and Ace. The more money they save on living expenses, the more than can donate to their mission.

This is where Matt Whelan stepped up as “Johnny on the Spot”. Through his connections with Village Realty, Matt contacted the owners of the “Croatan Surf Club” in Kill Devil Hills, who generously donated three luxury condominiums for the missionaries’ one week stay. Sam & Omie’s Restaurant also agreed to donate meals for the group.

Matt is not new to volunteering his time and resources to Hotline. He also MC’s the “Festival of Trees” annual winter fundraiser, as well as volunteers as Chairman for the Outer Banks “March of Dimes” hosting a variety of benefits for children.

He was a preemie which required her to spend an extensive six week stay away from home. The Ronald McDonald House was a Godsend at the time, offering a sanctuary for her and she was especially appreciative of the other families that came bringing food and gifts. This year, Cassandra decided to “pay it forward” and do what she could to help other families who will be guests at the same house this holiday season, while their loved ones are in the hospital. She is going back and bringing with her a Christmas feast of covered dishes and treats, a collaborative effort by many of her friends from the Housekeeping division of Village Realty and from her Outer Banks neighborhood. Her son is a now a healthy, happy and very active toddler. Cassandra is asking for stocking stuffer donations she can bring to the children who are in the Intensive Care Unit. Runners from across the country descended upon the Outer Banks over Veterans Day weekend for the 5th annual Outer Banks Marathon. High winds and rain plaguing the area throughout the week were gracious enough to dissipate in time to welcome thousands of runners and spectators. With over 7,000 participants, the 5 year anniversary marked record numbers for registration. Organizers attribute the scenic course and mild weather for the increase in popularity. Mile 1 through 26.2 offered runners a chance to navigate neighborhoods, historic landmarks, wooded nature preserve and the not so popular bridge leading to Manteo. The fast paced terrain gave elite runners an opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon and novice runners an opportunity to get their feet wet with distances ranging from the 1 mile Fun Run to the full marathon.

Things got under way Friday with the opening of the Expo. The air was thick with anticipation and excitement as runners filled Dare County Parks and Rec to pick up race packets and last minute essentials. There’s something to be said for receiving your T-shirt prior to running. Do you wear the shirt before or after you finish? Maybe you keep the shirt and forget the race? Most agree the medal is the real reason to go the distance. Saturday morning came early for participants in the 5k, 8k, 1 mile Fun Run & Diaper Dash. The crisp autumn air made for ideal conditions. Runners of all ages filled the track at First Flight Middle School as they prepared to face their challenge. The children beamed from ear to ear as they crossed the finish to parents filled with pride. The cool weather was responsible for many personal best finishing times. For those brave enough to take on the challenge runs (combining the 5k or 8k with the marathon or half marathon), Sunday morning would be a rude awakening.

The cattle call summoning runners to their corral didn’t come soon enough for those anxious to get things under way. The morning air was brisk as the sun made its way through the clouds. Half Marathoners started ahead of their counterparts in Kitty Hawk, offering them an opportunity to beat elite marathoners to the finish. Unfortunately, anyone running over a 2:20 half would be lapped by the cream of the crop marathoner. No matter where you landed in the pack, well wishers could be heard cheering runners by name, thanks to the ever popular personalized race bib.

Many local organizations sponsored aide stations along the way. The team from Village Realty went the extra mile providing runners with music, refreshments and their very own squad of cheerleaders. They donned specially made pirate t-shirts, dancing and singing to the lyrics of the “YMCA” by The Village People. “I think we played that song about 20 times, quipped Maslin Seal, a Village Realty team member. “Some of them looked like they had practiced ahead of time!” Not only did the Village Realty team unite on the sidelines, VP Dorie Fuller andBroker Matt Whelan ran the Half Marathon and First Colony Inn innkeeper Sarah Close and Broker Caroline Basnight ran the entire race. As one runner said later; “It was a great day all around. Seeing the kids at the Village Realty station wearing the pirate t-shirts and cheeering for us while they played music was motivational and inspiriational."

If you envision marathon runners as an over zealous group of athletes in running tights, think again. Organizers encouraged participants to bring out their inner pirate by dressing the part. Onlookers were treated to costumes ranging from Wonder Woman, to pirate garb and even full military gear as a tribute to Wounded Warriors.
As the pack made their way towards the finish, the bypass became a dumping ground for excess clothing. Many, not expecting such warmer weather, had to be treated for dehydration. Crossing the finish line brought the day to a close as runners completed a distance less than 2% of the population will ever experience. After a long weekend, the Marathon Village after party offered a chance to kick back, listen to live music, enjoy a bite to eat and if one were so advantageous, dance. In the spirit of “truth is stranger than fiction,” it’s worth mentioning that most runners sign up for their next race within a week of completing a half or full marathon.

There were many winners of different age and gender categories in the Outer Banks Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K, 5K and Fun Run races but the overall winner was John Crews (Age 26) from Raleigh, NC who completed the entire full run in 2 hrs. 20 minutes and 22.6 seconds.

Since the Outer Banks Marathon is a qualifying race for the coveted Boston Marathon, over 500 participants hailed from all over the world from Athens, Ohio to Kenya and everywhere in between.

Nags Head, NC – Recently, Emily Lewis (Property Manager) received an email that melted her heart. A family who had visited the Outer Banks year after year said they wished everything were different but they wouldn’t be able to make it to the beach this season because of a tragedy times two. Financial burdens from medical costs made it virtually impossible to afford their annual vacation, the last one they had planned to spend together, because both mother and brother had cancer.

Emily, told her friends at work Robbi Reed (Vacation Specialist) and Maggie Sexton (Nags Head Rental Manager) about the family. Robbi immediately called to inquire about their needs and Maggie contacted homeowner Bud Dean, proprietor of “Beach Break (CSC3A) townhouse/condo in the beautiful oceanfront Croatan Surf Club in Kill Devil Hills. One heart lead to another and wishes began to come true.

Bud offered his condo to the family, gratis for any week they wanted to come. When the family received the news, they were “stunned, excited and overwhelmed” by the generosity of everyone involved.

Jeannie Maynard (Web Services Manager) happily provided a gift certificate for a family dinner on-the-house at Goombays Grill & Raw Bar.

Jiminy Cricket (in Walt Disney’s 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio) once crooned, “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you.”

Huggins launches culinary adventures

Amy Pollard Huggins has big ideas about food.

That’s why this self-described “foodie” plans to soon open Outer Banks Epicurean in the old Charlene’s building along Colington Road.
“This is my new play ground and my new oyster,” she said with a smile and firm handshake.
Outer Banks Epicurean will feature healthy dinners to go, Huggins said.
“We hope to provide a good, delicious, comforting meal six days a week,” she said.

Outer Banks Epicurean has been a mobile business for the past five years, Huggins said, but now she’s got room to spread with culinary wings and grow some roots. In the past, they’ve offered home cooking classes and 10 Tastes of the Beach gift bags.

Epicurean means those who love food and drink, she said. Huggins chose the name because she too is passionate about food although her thin frame doesn’t reveal it.

In order to make Outer Banks Epicurean work, Huggins has established a number of revenue streams and hired a staff to help her with her dreams. The multi-disciplinary approach to her business could be the key to its success.

“We hope to have a creative vibe in here,” she said. There will hot coffee available and wireless internet access.
Altogether, Huggins has the following services based out of the large building: dinners to go; cooking classes; local food tours; 10 Tastes of the Outer Banks; cakes, pies and sweets; wine, beer and juice; culinary art; vintage linen; etiquette lessons; Outer Banks Sea Salt Bar and free tastings daily.

She hopes to offer three different dinners a day and advertise them in the morning on her sign out front. As folks from Colington pass by on their way to work in the morning, they can check out the menu.

Then, they can call in their order and pick it up on their way home, Huggins said. All the meals are to go, Outer Banks Epicurean isn’t a restaurant and therefore, there’s no seating inside.

Several of her ventures that have already proved successful are 10 Tastes of the Beach and in-cottage, cooking classes.
Jeannie Maynard of the web services department of Village Realty in Nags Head, said vacationers love to have a chef from Outer Banks Epicurean come in and explain how to cook such meals as fresh Outer Banks seafood.

Huggins said that Kim and Charlie Stoltz of Ohio, who have rented Village Realty homes in the past, have already scheduled their third in cottage cooking lesson for early September.

Village Realty has also supported Huggins in the past by purchasing gift certificates for give-a-ways.

“We are giving away twenty-five dollar gift certificates via Facebook with no purchase necessary,” Maynard said. “You do not have to be staying in a Village Realty house to win. We support local businesses and are always happy to help out someone with a new venture on the Outer Banks.”

Huggins said families thoroughly enjoy having a chef come into their year round home or rental house and cook creative meals. All the while, they get to learn from the professionals.

Different chefs will cook different cuisines, she said.

“Most people want to learn about Outer Banks seafood,” Huggins said.

And because the experience is typically multi-generational, sometimes the chefs swap great tips from seasoned cooks in the families.

In their new building, Outer Banks Epicurean will also celebrate cooking Outer Banks style with all local ingredients used in both lessons and back at the shop. The dinners to go will consist of a protein, starch and “veg,” Huggins said.

“They’ll be in the ten to twelve dollar range,” she said. All customers have to do is heat them up when they arrive home.”

The meals can also be complemented with sweets or a bottle of wine, Huggins said.

In the fall, she hopes to offer culinary weddings where couples can be married by an ordained chef.

“They can decorate their own cake,” Huggins said.

Another future plan includes a culinary garden in the back of the restaurant. They will also look to bottle and can foods. There’s talk of Pickle School, she said.

The culinary art will be both visual such as paintings of food and functional, such as pottery bowls and glass pitchers.

“[Blacksmith] Randy Hodges has his own oyster knives made from railroad spikes,” she said.

Huggins would also like to have jewelry made by College of the Albemarle students on display in cases.

Last but not least is her Outer Bank Sea Salt production.

“We make sea salt – all different flavors and blends,” she said. “Salt is fascinating, I feel like a scientist watching those crystals form – it’s so fascinating.”

And what’s life for a “foodie” without a little salt.

Columbia, NC – On Friday, May 14, 2010, employees and invited guests celebrated the opening of a new addition to Whitecap Linen, a commercial laundry, linen sales, and rental division of Graywater Traders, Inc., headquartered in Columbia, NC. The new boiler system building is an integral part of a 5 Year Improvement Project that will increase efficiency while reducing impact on the environment.

With President, Bob Oakes at the helm, White Cap Linen began implementing their 5 Year Improvement Project in 2009, with the introduction of environmentally friendly ‘green’ cleaning chemicals and a change from LP to Natural Gas, substantially lowering fuel consumption. The most recent accomplishment being the addition of a state-of-the-art Muira Boiler System, promising a 70% fuel savings and a marked improvement in production.

In speeches given by Michael Griffin, Mayor of Columbia, and Kim Wheeler, President of The Greater Tyrrell County Chamber of Commerce, Whitecap Linen was applauded for their efforts to protect the local environment, as well as being a partner to the community as an employer and avid supporter of local events.

Next steps include the installation of bulk chemical tanks to lower the cost per gallon of laundry chemicals and a new water recycling system. Each step of this plan saves overhead costs, keeping customer prices competitive in the Commercial Laundry Industry.

Gregory find adventure in daily commute

Karen Gregory starts each work day with a breathtaking vista of the sand dunes, an open beach and the shimmering sea.

The Village Realty employee journeys 15 miles on the sand from her home in Carova to the company's Corolla office five days a week.

"We live all the way up there at milepost 23," Gregory said. "The N.C. line is 24 milepost."

Her commute can be interrupted by sea turtles, wild horses or the occasional marine mammal, such as a seal.

After work, she heads north, hits the beach ramp at Ocean Hill and leaves the roads and her cares behind.

"That feels pretty darn good," Gregory said. "Come off the paved road, hit that sand with the ocean in front of me, the smell of the salt, it’s so relaxing."

It takes a certain type of vehicle to make the commute twice a day and she drives one of the preferred trucks for the job: a 1995 GMC Suburban with big tires.

"You can only drive clunkers on the beach," Gregory said. "It just doesn’t make sense to do anything else."

As for the big tires, she said they "make a big difference." Gregory also had a small lift job on the Suburban because the big tires were hitting the wheel wells.

Depending on the conditions, she may have to creep down the beach strand when tides are high or when there are a lot of people along the "road."

At other times, however, the beach is flat with no one around. Gregory compares these conditions to Daytona Beach. If she’s careful, Gregory said she can make good time, especially on the way to the Corolla office.

On these days, she can shift out of four-wheel drive and go down the hard-packed beach in two-wheel drive, Gregory said.

"Those of us who live up there try to preserve the four-wheel drive," she said. "Sometimes, I get home and realize, ‘oh, I never put it in four-wheel drive.’

"Air pressure is key, I use about seventeen [pounds of pressure] in all four," Gregory said.

The drive to and from Village Realty sometimes becomes an adventure.

"For me, the best things on the way to work and back are when I find critters on the beach," she said. "I’ve found turtles hatching; I’ve found seals that have come up.

"They just hang out on the beach and rest," Gregory said. "Shore birds are so funny to watch.

"They try to fly with big ole fish – just trying to fly," she said.

Gregory has commuted from Carova – a shortened version of Carolina and Virginia combined – for three years. Storms have caused her to miss work a few times.

"I’ve missed a total of five days because of the [high] tide," Gregory said, "three in a row from the November storm."

In 2007, Gregory and her husband moved from Pittsboro to the Currituck Outer Banks after vacationing there since 1995.

That came after spending five weeks vacationing in the area, which made them realize they should move to Carova.

"We need to buy something if we’re going to stay here so much," Gregory said.

They bought a house on Lighthouse Drive in Whalehead that was scheduled to be relocated or demolished and had it moved to Carova.

She did all of the research and planning to get the job done. Longtime friend, Charlie Robinson, helped them find a lot, she said.

As for the move, it was a sight to see.

"It was recycling at its best," Gregory said. "It leaves you with a clean building lot.

"They drove it up the beach – that was a trip," she said.

In addition to work and relaxing on the beach on days off, Gregory volunteers for the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles or NEST, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund and the Carova Beach Fire Department.

As a turtle nest sitter, she got a treat early one morning when she arrived at a loggerhead nest just as 98 baby turtles hatched.

"The suckers were halfway down the beach," Gregory said.

Other grand days include plenty of big dogs and dog parties on the beach with their friends and neighbors, especially when the weather is nice.

"The people who live up there are a lot of fun," she said. "It’s sort of like Cheers, everybody knows your name.

"We’ve also met some really, really nice people who’ve come up there on vacation," Gregory said.

"We have four dogs – they love the beach," she said. "Everybody up there seems to have big dogs. It can turn into a real dog party."

One such day, Gregory said there were 13 dogs in all, Labs and Golden Retrievers all playing in the ocean together.

So with the store so far away, what does Gregory and her husband Dean do when they run out of milk, bread or butter?

"You do without or call a neighbor!" she said.

Linda Porter to be the Featured Artist in May at Dare County Arts Council Gallery

Manteo, NC – Photographer Linda Porter will have her recent works on display at the Dare County Arts Council Gallery, May 7th through the 28th. Her vivid imagery and keen eye will make for an exhibit not to be missed. Linda’s work is inspired by her love of nature and travel. She spends her time capturing the essence of nature’s gifts, while traveling, kayaking or strolling around her island home. When not out capturing, she is in front of her computer giving life to her images in her digital darkroom or printing and framing.

Born in Korea, Linda came to the United States as the child of a military family. A licensed cosmologist, she moved to the Outer Banks in the early 1980s and opened the popular salon Shear Genius. When Hurricane Isabel destroyed her salon in 2003, Linda began to devote much of her time to developing her artistic skills beyond cosmetology. She began to nurture her creative side by exploring composition and light through a lens of a camera, and she became fascinated with the medium. Linda went on to study photography and the digital medium at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Montana. Currently, Linda operates Eastern Fusion Gallery in Nags Head, which she opened to house a small area for her salon. Here she continues to practice her trade as a cosmetologist, while displaying her works along with other artist and servicing her salon clients in a gallery setting.

The public is invited to join us for a First Friday opening reception on May 7th from 6pm until 8pm, featuring light fare, libations and the opportunity to meet the artist. The show is on exhibit through May 28th. DCAC Gallery hours are 10am – 6pm, Monday through Friday, and 12pm – 4pm on Saturday.

Trio La Mer Performs for the 13th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show

The 13th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show, sponsored by the Dare County Arts Council, the Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park, and Grizelle Fearing, will feature Trio La Mer at the opening reception Sunday, May 3rd from 2-4 pm.

Trio La Mer, the Outer Banks premier string and piano performing ensemble, was formed in 2006. Since then, they have performed regularly for recitals, social gatherings, and charity events throughout the Outer Banks of North Carolina. All three players in the ensemble teach music in Dare County schools. Each has received advanced performance training on their instruments. As individuals, they have collectively performed professionally in the mid-Atlantic region for over 60 years. The mission of Trio La Mer is to foster a greater appreciation and love of classic piano trio music by presenting free public concerts that educate, enlighten and entertain audiences on the Outer Banks. Their recital repertoire ranges from light classics to ragtime and from Bach to Beethoven with an occasional tango or two.

The Dare County Arts Council Gallery will be home to all things “girly” for their April exhibit entitled Girls! Girls! Girls! A Celebration of Women. This is a juried exhibit celebrating women in all of their beauty – from pin-ups to low-brow, from classical to contemporary, from homemaker to business executive. DCAC invited artists to display works of art depicting either women or the things that women love, or any combination thereof. Girls! Girls! Girls! will be a fun exhibition and we hope you can be a part of the excitement!

A lively First Friday reception will take place April 2nd from 6-8 pm and the show will run through April 30th. MANTEO, North Carolina (March 30, 2010) – A brand new event for beach music fans on the East Coast is coming to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Shag OBX will be held May 7-9, 2010 this Mother’s Day Weekend in Manteo at the Pirate's Cove Pavilion which makes for a perfect bite-size getaway. Sponsored by the Community Care Clinic of Dare, you can enjoy dance lessons from nationally recognized instructors Sam and Lisa West, shag to live music from Jim Quick and Coastline or spin to all your favorites with DJ’s Ed Timberlake and David Jones on the waterfront.
“Our SHAG stands for Support Healthcare Access for Good living,” explains Charles Gill, Chair of the event and Community Care Clinic of Dare (CCCD) Board member. “We are taking the lead step in caring for the health of uninsured and underinsured workers on the OBX, offering free clinics for those who live and work in Dare. Shagging is the North Carolina state dance and has origins here on the Outer Banks, which is a natural fit for promoting and supporting healthy living on the beach.”

Last year, 235 new patients registered for Community Care Clinic services, with almost 1,200 patient visits with providers overall. More than 1,300 free long term prescriptions were dispensed and 1,200 short term prescriptions were written, many of which were free. First opening its doors in May 2005, the CCCD has three locations providing service in Kitty Hawk, Manteo and Frisco. To inquire about patient eligibility, please call 261-3041.

First Colony Inn weddings

With wedding season just around the corner, a number of venues have scheduled open houses at their respective locations so vendors can check them out.

Last Friday, several dozen people enjoyed a social at the historic First Colony Inn in Nags Head.

Innkeeper Sarah Close was there to meet and greet everyone. She answered plenty of questions about having a wedding or other event at First Colony.

“We’re happy to cater to brides’ needs,” Close said. “The inn has 26 rooms with ocean to sound views from the third floor.

“The wedding can be on the lawn on the ocean side of the building under tents,” she said. “Or it can be on our private beach access. Then, they can come back and have the reception under the tents.”

A former inn owner on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Close said she choose the Outer Banks to relocate to because it felt like home when visiting.

As the social got under way, Close found herself networking with Gwen Hart and Brian Marty of Culinary Magick. As the trio compared notes on event bookings, they sampled different appetizers Close created.

Marty said this year looked good for events.

“This coming season is awesome,” he said. “We just put four contracts in the mail today.”

Hart and Marty said they stopped by the social to see the lay out of First Colony in case they get an event there.

“I’ve always heard it was nice and quaint and it really is,” Hart said.

Marty also liked the beach aspect available.

“I love it – that’s nice,” he said. “Get married [on the beach] and boom, walk back.”

P. J. and Debra Sinkage, owners of Argyles in Kitty Hawk, also showed up to check things out. They’ve already worked a few catering gigs at First Colony.

“It’s a great venue,” P. J. said. “People were very thrilled with this.”

He thinks with the tent and all of the parking, it’s just an excellent set-up.
Debra said during those jobs, the First Colony staff was easy to work with. She’s also all about the style of the venue with its “beachy,” old-world charm.

“It’s got a touch of old Nags Head,” she said. “This is why people first started coming down here.”

Photographer Jay Wickens also stopped by for the event for a soft drink and some food. He has around 12 weddings booked for this year so far, he said.

He was pleased to be invited and decided to stop by.

“I just wanted to check it out,” Wickens said.

Sea Glass Workshop

Manteo - Searching for sea glass along our beaches is a much-loved pass time. It is always a thrill when one of these “jewels” is discovered, but have you ever wondered about the origins of sea glass, and what makes them so interesting? Artist Pem Bryant will answer many of your questions when he leads an informational Sea Glass Workshop, Saturday, March 20th, 9am – 12pm at the Dare County Arts Council studios. Our studio is located at 104 Sir Walter Raleigh Street in Manteo. Cost of attendance is $30 for DCAC members, and $40 non-members.

Topics will include the history of sea glass, dating the glass, ascertaining its value, the conditioning process, colors and rarity, differences between authentic and tumbled glass, plus tips and tricks of sea glass hunters.

Additionally, Pem will display prized finds from his personal collection, including Indian pottery, earthenware, and plate ware. Attendees are also invited to bring their glass for identification.

Pem is a jewelry artists working primarily with sea glass, and is owner of the jewelry studio Sea, Sand and Hand in Kill Devil Hills. Of his passion for sea glass, he says “Although I started out picking up everything that looked like something that could be made into art, I eventually began to focus my interest on sea glass… romance, history, and intrigue can only begin to describe the mysterious nature of authentic sea glass.” Pem is a member of the North American Sea Glass Association. Dare County Arts Council presents Salty foodART Exhibition

Manteo, NC – Salty foodART Exhibition is a collaborative between Outer Banks Epicurean, a local culinary business, and Dare County Arts Council. The event will be held at Dare County Arts Council Gallery in Manteo and Amy Huggins, owner of Outer Banks Epicurean, will curate the show. There is no fee to attend the exhibit, which will be on display through the month of March.

The inspiration for this exhibit is from Dare County Restaurant Association’s annual Taste of the Beach Weekend. Salty foodART Exhibition will feature artwork inspired by food, eating and all things culinary. Invitations were extended to local artists to exhibit their own culinary art. Pottery, Glass, Textiles, Photographs, Paintings, Metal, Wood, New Media and more will be represented. These highly accredited and internationally collected artists who will be exhibited all live on the Outer Banks.

The groups will be hosting two receptions introducing the Salty artists. The public is invited to both events. DCAC hosts the First Friday Opening Reception on March 5, 6-8 pm. This is always a lively gathering which includes light fare, libations and often live music. Then, on Thursday, March 11, Outer Banks Epicurean hosts Amuse Bouche: A Collector’s Reception from 6 - 8pm. It is presented for serious art collectors and art buyers who are interested in purchasing original artwork. Both receptions will be held at the DCAC Gallery, located at 104 Sir Walter Raleigh Street in Downtown Manteo.

In support of the local culinary arts, a Salty themed collection jar for the Dare County Arts Council’s Scholarship Fund, which now includes the culinary arts, will be on display throughout the exhibition.

Katy Caroline to be the Featured Artist in February at Dare County Arts Council Gallery

One of the Outer Banks’ most vibrant young artists, Katy Caroline, will have her work featured February 5 – 26, 2010 at the DCAC Gallery, in her show called “Bid in a Box.” This show is an unusual concept where most of the works will be available for blind bidding during the month of February. Why? Katy Caroline wants to be generous to those who have supported her work, so for this limited time she will be offering most her recent works up for auction. Bids range from $20 to $300.00 and sizes range from 5” x 5” to 28” x 59.5”, and this is all original work. You may place your bids throughout the month, with the winners notified at the close of the show. What's more, for anyone who prefers traditional gallery opportunities, you will have that option, too.

Katy Caroline is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but moved to the Outer Banks in 1997. She is primarily a self-taught artist who works in acrylics, painting on any surface she finds interesting at her “art lab” in Point Harbor, NC. Much of her award winning work has involved commissioned pieces, including murals, trompe l’oeils, and illustrations. Currently her works is an exploration in color, focusing on her favorite subject, the idyllic scenery of the Outer Banks. Katy Caroline also finds tremendous satisfaction is giving back to her community, with volunteer work and supporting local charities through her art.

“Bid in a Box” opens Friday, February 5th, with a reception from 6pm – 8pm at the DCAC Gallery, located at 104 Sir Walter Raleigh Street in downtown Manteo. The usual lively atmosphere at the Gallery will be enhanced with light fare, libations and live music from Ed Tupper and Becky Kessler. Additionally, on Friday, February 12th, Katy Caroline will host a “Demo Day,” where she will be lecturing and demonstrating her technique. Join her between 3pm and 6pm in the teaching studio at DCAC. This event is free to Arts Council Members or there is a $5 suggested donation for non-members. Plus, attendees are promised a surprise from Katy Caroline. Then on Thursday, February 18th, stop by the show for your chance to win a pet portrait, available for this one day only. The winner for this will be drawn at the end of the day.

Simansky donates ‘fish’ boards for charity

NAGS HEAD -- For Vince Simansky, the New Year means a new project.
He just picked up an original 1970 Manx SR dune buggy, a rare and unique vehicle he plans to restore, drive and then possibly sell.
It has a serial number and “badges” or logos on the front and back, which makes it more valuable.

Simansky loves fixing things and that’s why he’s great at his day job as the manager of the pools and spas department at Village Realty in Nags Head.

In addition to fixing up old cars, he also likes to shape a few surf boards each year and for the past five years, he’s donated several boards to Hotline’s Festival of Trees.
During the event last month, Simansky’s boards fetched $1,000. All total, his boards have brought in $4,575 for this charity event since 2005.

The two boards he donated this past Christmas during the Festival of Trees were both retro fish boards. It was a shape popular back in the 70s, Simansky said. One had a blue resin tint, the other a faux balsa wood finish.

His two hobbies go hand in hand nicely and a perfect summer day for him would be taking each vehicle out for a ride.
“I’d be in a dune buggy with a board on top that I made going to surf and the surf was good,” Simansky said.

And for those who know him, it’s hard to miss seeing Simansky cruising down the beach road when he’s one of these missions.

The two hobbies did cross over recently when he made and gave a short board to Bruce Meyers, the inventor of the Manx dune buggy.

Simansky surprised Meyers with the gift at a show in Carlisle, Pa. Now, Meyers uses the board in advertisements for his new Kick-Out dune buggies.
As for the donations to Hotline, he has his reasons for doing it.

“I just wanted to get my name out there,” Simansky said. “It’s a service to the community, donating the boards.”

He started surfing at age 13 and has 34 years of experience wave riding. About five years ago, he started making boards.

In his quiver, Simansky has eight boards from a 12 foot 6 inch tandem to a 6 foot 2 inch “fat fish,” he said.

Messing around with dune buggies is one of his newest pursuits. He’s already finished restoring a FiberJet Beachcomber Buggy, a Spatz buggy and an original Meyers Manx dune buggy. Simansky has a background in restoring sailboats when he lived in Maryland. “I like fixing things,” he said, “bringing something back to life.”

When he was a child, his dad wanted to buy and assemble a Bradley GT kit car but they never got around to it. So, about four years ago, Simansky decided to try his hand at restoring the dune buggies.

Part of the process also includes selling the dune buggies once he’s restored them.

Simansky said he’s not sure if it’s a hobby or an addiction but he just likes “wheelin’ and dealin’” as he puts it.

In order to keep in good graces with his wife Vonnie, Simansky said that when buys a new project car or boat, one of the previous ones “has to go.”

Vince and Vonnie have three children, Andrew, Julie and Lindsay. They reside on Roanoke Island.

Village Realty raises $5,000 plus for needy

(Nags Head, N.C.) When it comes to helping those in need for the holidays, the Village People are really on the ball.
During December, the employees of Village Realty raised $2,534.05 through in-house promotions to help out various families who needed assistance on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The money is raised through such things as silent auctions, raffles and a Wii-game bowling tournament, said Emily Lewis, who oversees the contests. “In the past, we adopted eight families,” she said.

And because Village Realty matches all money raised dollar for dollar, their grand total for needy families this month totals $5,068.10.
Maslin Seal, a sales technology technician for the company, was the first winner.

In the silent auction held by the accounting department, she bid $320 for a two-night stay at one of the companies’ Ocracoke rental homes, Beach Therapy, owned by Nags Head Mayor Bob Oakes, the president of Village Realty.
Seal can’t wait to enjoy her prize. “It was very exciting,” she said. “My daughter Skyler wants to go for New Year’s Eve and that would be cool.”

Seal admitted the $300 she used for the bidding came from her mother as a Christmas present. When the bids shot straight up to $300 in the first hour, she though she wouldn’t get it.

But then, Seal had an idea.

“Well I can pitch in twenty bucks of my own.” It was all Seal needed to seal the deal on this popular, pet-friendly, two bedroom Ocracoke jewel.

Another contest will to send Beth Tillson sky high.

She was the winner of the association management department’s ultra-light flight for two.

“Beth and friend will take a once in a lifetime flight to see the Outer Banks from a bird’s eye view,” Lewis said.

But wait, there’s much, much more.

In the web services’ silent auction, Sue Hawley and Bill Kobernick won a weekend stay in a three bedroom vacation home in Deep Creek Lake, Md.

Deep Creek Lake has a multitude of activities for every taste from the super adventurer to the king of relaxation. There’s biking, hiking, golf, skiing and snowboarding.

Additional contests winners were: Courtney Fowler won Jackie’s shoe auction with $50; Kim Murray won the guest operation’s grill raffle, which raised $460; Bettie Blanchard walked away with $500 in the sales department 50/50 raffle - $500; Matt Parks was the champion of the Wii Bowling Tournament that raised $125; Dave Wigginton donated $100 and Chinese auction at the Corolla office brought $280.

A host of Corolla businesses made donations to the auction.

Lewis said she’s pleased with the amount of money Village Realty raised for charity this year and she said they hope they raise even more money next year.

Tomberlins find paradise in Ocracoke

(Ocracoke Island, N.C.) – In the midst of a busy month, the Tomberlin family of Burnside dropped everything and took off for a free, week-long stay in paradise – Ocracoke Island.
Renee Tomberlin won the free week’s stay with only one entry in the Great Vacation Giveaway sponsored by OBX Connection and Ocracoke Island Realty.

While they were there, they landed red drum in the surf, rode bikes around the island, hiked a natural trail and relaxed in a comfortable cottage aptly named “Beach Therapy.” It’s owned by Nags Head Mayor Bob Oakes.

It all happened when Tomberlin received a cell phone call from Will Dwyer of OBX Connection who told her she had won.
“I almost drove off the road,” she said.

After checking with her husband Dean, they decided to take the trip immediately.

“We decided that we were just going to go for it,” she said, “to heck with the schedule, the economy, the football games and the kids.

“So, we left a house partially remodeled and in disarray, a son who might or might not still be playing in the North Carolina State High School football play-offs, and a business that hasn't been busy enough lately and headed to Ocracoke.

For the first time in their lives, the Tomberlins spent an entire week from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6 on Ocracoke, a small island past Cape Hatteras, which is only accessible by boat.
While they were there, they did what they love to do best – surf fish.

“We caught ‘em on and off throughout the week,” Renee said. “We fished four or five days of the week.”

On the Tuesday of their vacation week, they were fishing and catching red drum on the beach at South Point. It was beautiful night, she added.

“There was a full moon, the wind laid down and we were catching fish one after another,” Renee said. “We were the only truck on the beach – it was amazing.”

For some 25 years, the Tomberlins have opted to stay in Hatteras Village or Frisco so they could easily fish the south beaches of Hatteras or Cape Point in Buxton.

But they found all they needed on Ocracoke.

“The surf fishing was so good for us, we opted to stay [during the day] in Ocracoke,” Renee said.

Another part of the trip they liked the most was the comfort of Beach Therapy.

“We loved it, it was great for our needs, comfortable, clean and in a great area,” Renee said. “We loved it.”

Another fun activity she enjoyed with her son was a long bike ride on Friday. The prize package came with two free bike rentals.
“Jordan and I rode for eight to nine miles,” Renee said. “We went down every road, to Springer’s Point and the lighthouse.

“We spent all day looking at the area,” he said. “We walked through Springer’s Point, which was a beautiful, beautiful area.”

In addition to the fishing, cottage comfort and natural beauty, the Tomberlins also enjoyed the hospitality extended to them while they were there.

One day when they returned to the cottage, there was gift basket full of “treats, a bottle of wine and things like that” from Zillie’s Island Pantry, Renee said.
In addition, the realty company staff went out of their way to make the vacation special, she added.

“It was a wonderful time,” Renee said. “The helpful, friendly and nice ladies at Ocracoke Island Realty were personable and that meant a great deal.”
Now that it’s all said and done, the Tomberlins believe they may have found their new paradise.

“After that week, we’ll probably stay on Ocracoke Island again,” Renee said. “A million thanks to Will and Ocracoke Island Realty.”

ART 21 SCREENING

Dare County Arts Council is screening Season 5 of PBS’s hit television show Art 21. “Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century” is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, and it uses the medium of television to provide an experience of the visual arts that goes far beyond a gallery visit. Fascinating and intimate footage allows the viewer to observe the artists at work, watch their process as they transform inspiration into art, and hear their thoughts as they grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic visions.
The Dare County Arts Council will be screening 5 episodes of Art 21. These 5 episodes give an insight into five artist’s artwork and studio space. These artists are the forerunners for contemporary art in the United States. This is a great opportunity to learn about contemporary art practices in the 21st century.

Dare County Arts Council is hosting Season 5 of Art 21 on Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 at 6:45 pm at the Dare Campus of the College of the Albemarle in Room 201. Dare Campus of College of the Albemarle is located on Russel Twiford road beside CVS in Manteo. Admission is free and open to the public. Refreshments are being sold by the Student Government Association of the College of the Albemarle.

Annual Outer Banks Parade of Homes

The 17th Annual Outer Banks Parade of Homes will be held from October 8-11, 2009. This year there are 29 homes on the tour stretching from Corolla on the northern Outer Banks down to Hatteras Island.

The Outer Banks Home Builders Association sponsors the Parade of Homes Tour. The tour is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday. Those participating are welcome to take the tour at their own pace, enjoying the variety of designs and decor of these beautiful Outer Banks homes.

Tickets to the event are $10.00 per person, with children under 12 attending free when accompanied by an adult. The purchase price includes plan book which features a set of maps and directions for the tour.

2009 Outer Banks Photo Contest Winners

Village Realty on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is pleased to announce the winners of their 2009 Photo Contest.

The contest was open to anyone, no purchase was required. The only criteria was that the photos submitted must have been taken while on the Outer Banks. The subject could be a person, family, places, pets, the beach, local attraction or anything pertaining to the Outer Banks. Professional photographers submissions were not considered.

There were over 1,600 entries and the quality of the photos was excellent. After much deliberation and with the help of three local professional photographers on the Outer Banks the finalists were narrowed down to seven pictures.

The reservation staff from both Corolla and Nags Head then got to choose the winners.

First place prize is a free week at the beach during the off season in a Village Realty home.

The winner is Anh D. from Vienna, VA who sent in a beautiful photo of a young boy flying a kite on the beach.

First runner up was Doug G. from Richmond, VA who submitted a photo of his daughter on a boogie board.

The next five photos were all finalists and will receive a $100 gift certificate that may be applied toward a future stay with Village Realty. They will also get a second $100 gift certificate to be passed on to a friend or family member.
